The Canine Cause It’s never easy to lose a pet. My wife Angie and I love labs. When we lost our first “boy” Jake, we turned to the wonderful people at Lab Rescue. They supported us in our search for a new four-legged friend to fill that lab-sized hole in our hearts. They learned our story and, in turn, we discovered their story – that of hundreds of labs in need of a good home. And, equally as important, the people who volunteer to care for those dogs as fosters, vets and coordinators.
It is because of those people and those loveable Labradors that I founded Ride2TheRescue.com. It’s an initiative to generate donations through training for long distance rides and regional cycling events. In the first year (2007), I logged more than 1,800 miles, completed two Century (100 mile) rides, and with the generosity of friends, family, businesses and some very gracious unknowns, raised $2,900 for Lab Rescue. Plus, I met some great, like-minded folks along the way.
The Cycle Continues
In February, we again lost another best friend, Sadie… the gentle little sister to the alpha Jake. It’s now very real to me that life is not linear, but very much a cycle … of gain, of loss, of renewal … and of second chances. Since we first added to our family with Jake and Sadie, we have expanded our “pack,” rescuing two great dogs – a Chocolate named Emily and a Yellow named Shiloh. They play together in the back yard, beg for food, talk to us (and our neighbors), sleep on the couch when we are away ... and always greet us with enthusiastic tail-wagging and 90lbs of barreling love. Doing all that dogs do to complete a family.
